MSI GTX 1070 Micron vs Samsung memory - how to find out manufacturer

I've built my new rig recently [link], that includes MSI GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card. This model, as well as others, features either Samsung or Micron memory. It's known that there had been problems reported for GTX cards including Micron GDDR5 memory [link], when it comes to overclocking. Even if these problems have been resolved, I've decided to pick Samsung one just to avoid BIOS updates etc. Unfortunately, it turned out it's not possible to tell the difference between a card with Samsung and Micron memory, unless you plug-in the card and check the memory manufacturer in GPU-Z app or similar.

So I've decided I will simply call MSI for some help. Luckily, the guy on the tech support was a really decent chap and he sent me a spreadsheet that you can use to tell the difference between Micron and Samsung card based only on the information you can find out on the graphics card box. Here's the spreadsheet:

[V330_Note.xlsx spreadsheet]

How to find out the memory manufacturer with this?

First you need to find out the revision number of the particular card. The revision number are the first 3 characters after the second dash character ('-') of the card's serial number (S/N). You can find out card's serial number on the GPU box sticker. To give you an example, here's the sticker from MSI GTX 1070 box:

[box sticker photo]

Thus, in this case, the serial number is:

S/N:602-V330-08Sxxxxxxxxxxx

'08S' is the revision number we are looking for (as these are first 3 character after the second dash character.) Now we can find out which manufacturer's memory was included in that MSI graphics card by looking at the 'BOM' column in the MSI spreadsheet:

Now we now, that '08S' revision (as well as revisions '06s' and '100') features Samsung memory, rather than Micron.

Hope that helps you.

TL;DR

If you are trying to buy MSI GTX 1070 card with Samsung memory rather than Micron you can use the spreadsheet in this post to find out the card's memory manufacturer just refering to the serial number written on the graphics card box.

Device Manager

Many versions of Microsoft Windows automatically detect and install your video card. Assuming no video issues exist with the video card, you can determine the video card is installed in the computer by accessing the Device Manager and looking under 'Display adapters.'

As seen in the picture, this computer has two video cards and both are labeled as NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX, which is the manufacturer and model of the video card.

If you right-click the video card and select Properties, you will get a window like the properties window also shown in this picture. As you can see, the location of this video card is PCI slot 2, which is helpful for computers with more than one video card expansion slot.

Note

If your video card is being detected as a 'Standard VGA' adapter, Windows may not be detecting your video hardware correctly. If you need to determine the model of your video card so you can install the correct drivers, use a third-party program as detailed in the next step.

Third-party program

Download one of the third-party programs for detecting computer hardware. These utilities can be used to help identify and list all of the hardware found in your computer. One of the better third-party programs for detecting the hardware in your computer is Belarc Advisor, which is a free program to download and use.

At boot or POST

Many video cards and chipsets will list the video card and memory during the POST. Try rebooting the computer and as it is booting up, press the 'Pause / Break' key to temporarily halt the computer's boot process and read the text on the screen. If you are unfamiliar with video card manufacturers or chipsets, write down some of the company names you see and search our video card drivers section for that company.

OEM look up

If you have an OEM computer (e.g., Dell, Hewlett Packard, etc.), find the serial number or service tag number on the computer. Look up your computer on the manufacturer's website using the serial number or service tag to identify the video card and download drivers for it.

Debug routine

Note

New versions of Windows no longer include the debug command. If you are running Windows Vista, 7, or 8, skip to the next step.

The steps below require that the user first get to an MS-DOS prompt or Windows command line.

At the C:> prompt, type the following command:

debug

At the - prompt, type the following command:

d c000:0040

After typing the above command, you should receive several lines of text similar to the following:

The example dump above gives you enough information to determine the make and the year of the video card. On line four in the above dump, you can see the make of this video card, which is nVIDIA TNT. If you were to search online, you would find that nVIDIA TNT is the Riva TNT graphics card chipset. Line five of the above dump provides the version of the card and line six provides the Copyright, which is the year the graphics card was manufactured.

If you cannot capture any information that sounds like the video card, you can also type the following:

-d c000:0090

The above command gives you a dump similar to the example dump above. However, it may have additional information about the video card.

NoteGraphics Card Serial Number Lookup

If the video card is onboard, you may get the motherboard name or chipset. If you have an onboard video card, you should get the video drivers for your chipset. Commonly the video drivers or chipset drivers are available through the motherboard manufacturer.

Once you are ready to exit the debug prompt, type quit and press Enter to exit back to the MS-DOS prompt. If you want to close the MS-DOS window, type exit and press Enter.

Open the computer

Unplug everything from the back of the computer, open the computer, and look for any visual identification directly off of the video card or motherboard. Many times you can find the manufacturer name, model, serial number, or other unique identifying information that can be used to identify the video card or video chipset you have. The picture below is an example of an AGP video card.

LookupTip

If your video card is on the motherboard, you can find the motherboard video chipset by identifying the motherboard make and model and reading the motherboard documentation.

FCC identification number

If you cannot locate a manufacturer or model number of the video card, but you see an FCC identification number, it is recommended that you perform an FCC search using that number. Additional information about FCC numbers and how to search for information about an FCC number is on our FCC definition.
