I've set windows update setting to check for updates but notify me before downloading in order to prevent it from automatically using up my traffic. But then I have to manually tell it when to start downloading. By default, Windows will check for updates at 3am which should suit your situation, so you should leave it set to automatically check for updates instead of doing it manually. It should be waking the systemat 3am to do the check, but if it’s not doing so even when set to automatic updates, then it will do it the next time you boot up, which could be past 7am.
